The five pathways / 02 / Mindset

Respond with purpose.

Mindset in everyday life

Create space between the event and your response.

Notice the moments when doubt, frustration or overthinking starts to direct your choices. These four questions offer a way to pause and consider what to do next.

01 / AWARENESS

Notice the pattern.

Pay attention to situations that repeatedly leave you second-guessing yourself. What happened, what did you feel and how did you respond?

ASK YOURSELF Have I reacted this way before?

02 / PERSPECTIVE

Question your first interpretation.

An unanswered message or a difficult conversation can leave room for assumptions. Separate what you observed from the meaning you have attached to it.

ASK YOURSELF What do I know, and what am I assuming?

03 / INFLUENCE

Find something you can act on.

Other people’s decisions and past events may be outside your control. Look at your own choices, communication and preparation for a useful next step.

ASK YOURSELF Which part of this can I influence?

04 / ACTION

Take a considered step.

Some decisions need more information. Others need a small first attempt. Decide what would help you move forward, then review what you learn.

ASK YOURSELF What is a reasonable next action?

Putting it into practice

When your mind fills in the gaps.

You send someone a message and hear nothing back. Before long, you’re wondering whether you’ve upset them or said the wrong thing.

That interpretation may feel convincing, but a delayed reply gives you very little information. There could be several explanations.

Writing down the facts, your assumptions and a reasonable next action can help you approach the situation more deliberately.
