We all have bad times in our lives, some much worse than others. When we have these moments of darkness it’s difficult to see the light at the end of the tunnel. It is during these times that we need to try and focus our attention not just on the negatives but also on the positives in our lives. Practising gratitude can help with this by putting things into perspective, for when we can see the good along with the bad it becomes increasingly difficult to remain in a negative state.
Here are 5 great tips for cultivating gratitude in your life.
Turn negative situations into positives, for example, if you dread going to school or work because you don’t like your job try to look forward to going because all of your cool friends will be there.
Be genuinely happy to hear from people who call you on the phone. It will make their day and the reciprocity will make yours.
Give at least one compliment a day, don’t do this just for the sake of it but really find a way to compliment somebody. The more you do this, the easier it will become.
Smile at strangers. It’s free, fun and when returned is a real joy. Who knows, that simple smile may be the start of a beautiful relationship.
Keep a gratitude journal. Each day you can write one thing in the journal that you are grateful for in life. This can be something as simple as owning a nice warm coat or a comfy pair of shoes, to something more meaningful like having the love of friends and family or having a roof over your head. Remember, no matter how trivial you think something is, it could be the world to somebody else.
