I used to think the little things didn’t matter.
If I left the dishes until later, missed a walk, didn’t stretch, ate rubbish for a day—it was no big deal. I’d tighten up when it counted. I’d show up when it mattered.
But that mindset catches up with you.
Because the truth is, the way you do the small things starts to bleed into everything else.
The moment I started holding myself to a higher standard in the ordinary stuff—how I wake up, how I keep my space, how I speak to people, how I finish the job even when no one’s checking—I noticed a shift. Not just in results, but in how I felt about myself.
Now don’t get me wrong—I’m still bad for not stretching after training. It’s one of those habits I’ve always struggled to build. But I’m getting better. Bit by bit. Discipline is a muscle. You strengthen it by showing up, even when it’s inconvenient. Especially when it’s inconvenient.
Confidence doesn’t come from achievement—it comes from consistency. From knowing you do what you say you’ll do, even when no one else knows about it.
I’ve gone through phases where I’ve let myself off the hook too often. Where I’ve told myself, “I’ll get back on it next week” or “This doesn’t really matter.” But over time, those small slips add up. They become who you are.
And when you stop trusting yourself to do the basics, everything gets harder.
Now, I try to treat the small things with more respect.
Not obsessively—but intentionally.
Make the bed. Clean the kitchen. Keep the promise I made to myself—even if it’s just going for a 20-minute walk or switching off the phone by 9pm.
Because I’ve learned that how I do those things impacts how I train, how I work, how I speak to others, and how I deal with setbacks.
It’s all connected.
So if something in your life feels off, don’t just look at the big stuff. Zoom in. Look at how you’re handling the basics.
Because how you do one thing… is how you do everything.
Following on from this post, if the idea of small actions shaping bigger outcomes resonates with you, I’d recommend Atomic Habits by James Clear. It’s a practical, no-fluff book about how consistent daily habits—however small—can completely shift your results and identity over time. Really useful if you’re working on discipline or trying to get your life moving in a better direction.
