As a non-believer in the supernatural and an atheist with no beliefs in any god or deity, I have never received a sign or message from a higher power, nor have I ever witnessed anything slightly supernatural or alien. I am sure most religious people and believers in the supernatural will put this down to my lack of belief, after all, most of them have had signs or glimpses into the supernatural so they ‘know’ for certain these things are as real as they are. Even the believers who haven’t personally had any supernatural experiences just ‘know’ these things are real, this is what is known as faith.

Many of these believers will tell me that God hasn’t given me any signs because of my lack of faith and that he only shows himself to those who believe. Similarly ghost hunters and believers in the afterlife will say that I have never been given a sign from a loved one who has passed away because of my lack of belief in ghosts and life after death.

I find it terribly convenient for the believers that they have been given signs and rather unfair that I haven’t. Shouldn’t it be the other way round? Shouldn’t god show himself to the doubters and help them to change their minds? not those with faith who don’t need any convincing.

I also find it rather unfair that people I know who believe in ghosts and the afterlife have heard their name being called by a loved one who has passed away or felt their arm around their shoulder in times of grief, some have even had visions of them at the end of their beds and felt comforted and consoled that their loved ones are in a better place.

As for me, well I don’t believe in ghosts and although I would like to believe in the afterlife, I have never witnessed anything to convince me of its existence. I miss my mother dearly and I am sure she would know this. Why then hasn’t she given me any kind of sign to let me know that she is happy and in a better place?

Let me have your thoughts – Why is it only the believers who are given signs from god and departed loved ones?
